Sometimes you may need to send the same message or email to several people at once. Instead of selecting contacts one by one every time, your iPhone lets you organize people into contact lists. This feature makes it easy to communicate with a group in just a few taps.
For example, you might want a list for family members, office colleagues, or friends planning a trip together. Once the list is created, you can quickly message or email everyone in that group.
In recent versions of iOS, Apple renamed Contact Groups to Lists inside the Contacts app. These lists also sync across your Apple devices through iCloud, so they remain available on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac if contact syncing is turned on.
This guide explains how to create a contact list, manage it, and use it to send messages or emails efficiently.

Create a Contact List on iPhone
You can create a new list directly from the Contacts section on your iPhone.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Phone app on your iPhone.
- Tap Contacts at the bottom of the screen.
- In the top-left corner, tap the back arrow (<) to view all lists.
- Tap Add List in the upper-right corner.
- Enter a name for the list, such as Family, Work, or Friends.
- Tap Done or the check icon to save it.
Add Contacts to the List
After creating the list, you can start adding people to it.
- Open the newly created List.
- Tap Add Contacts in the center of the screen.
- Choose the contacts you want to include.
- Tap Done to add them.
Your contact list is now ready to use.
How to Manage Contact Lists on iPhone
Once you have created a list, you can update it anytime by adding or removing contacts.
Add Contacts to an Existing List
If you want to include more people later:
- Open Contacts and go to Lists.
- Select the list you want to update.
- Tap the Add (+) button in the top-right corner.
- Choose the contacts you want to include.
- Tap Done.
Alternative method:
Open a contact’s profile, scroll down, tap Add to List, and select the list.
Remove Someone from a List
Removing a contact from a list does not delete them from your phone.
Steps:
- Open Contacts → Lists.
- Select the list.
- Swipe left on the contact’s name.
- Tap Remove.
The contact will simply be removed from that list.
Delete a Contact List
If you no longer need a list, you can delete it.
- Go to Contacts → Lists.
- Tap Edit in the top-left corner.
- Tap the red delete icon beside the list name.
- Tap the trash icon and confirm.
Deleting a list will remove only the group, not the contacts stored on your iPhone.
Send a Group Message Using a Contact List
After creating a list, sending a message to everyone becomes much faster.
Method 1: Message All (iOS 17 or Later)
- Open Contacts → Lists.
- Press and hold the list name.
- Tap Message All.
This will automatically start a group conversation with all members of that list.
Method 2: Send a Message Manually
- Open the Messages app.
- Tap the New Message icon.
- Type the list name or tap + to select contacts manually.
- Write your message and tap Send.
If some contacts are not using iMessage, they will receive the message as a standard SMS.
Send a Group Email from a Contact List
Contact lists can also be useful when sending emails to several people.
Steps:
- Open Contacts → Lists.
- Select the list.
- Tap the Mail icon at the top.
- Write your email and tap Send.
This method works well for team updates, invitations, announcements, or event planning.
